After a day of navigating the frenetic roads of Ho Chi Minh City, a well-deserved cocktail somewhere far above street level usually ranks in as a top evening priority. The good news is that this sprawling metropolis has a plethora of excellent rooftop bars—some with rich, historic connotations, others with a little more 21st-century panache. Here are five of our picks for fantastic elevated watering holes around the city.
1. Chill Skybar Restaurant & Lounge Since opening in late 2011, Chill has raised the bar for Ho Chi Minh City’s social scene with a spectacular venue on the 26th floor of the AB Tower. You can expect staggering views, stellar service, and perfectly rendered cocktails—just be aware there is a dress code (read: no shorts and flip flops). 2. Broma A hip little bar set inside an old French-colonial-period building, Broma won’t induce vertigo but the open lounge on the fourth floor is flanked by two of the city’s newest and flashiest skyscrapers: Saigon Times Square and Bitexco Financial Tower. The view is just as dazzling as the city’s more pretentious watering holes, but the prices are a little more down to earth. 3. Breeze Sky Bar Built along the riverfront in 1925, the Majestic Hotel is exactly the kind of place where Agatha Christie would have imagined Hercule Poirot solving a murder mystery while sojourning in Cochinchina. The fifth-floor, all-day Breeze Sky Bar has the historical edge over the more recently developed M Bar on the eighth floor, if less of a view. With an eyeful of the Saigon River and garden style furniture, the bar oozes colonial romance. 4. Shri A stylish restaurant lounge with a leafy rooftop area, Shri boasts one of the city’s best-stocked cellars with close to 20 wines available by the glass alone. The expert bar staff also pours a mean cocktail making Shri one of the best spots in town for a nightcap. And the European-inspired menu is worth the splurge for dinner if you’re looking to make a night out of it. 5. Alto Helipad Bar The pinnacle of modern-day Ho Chi Minh City is the Bitexco Financial Tower, an eye-catching skyscraper that symbolizes the city’s vertiginous rise as a major business hub. You can soak up the panoramic views from the Alto Helipad Bar on the 52nd floor nearly 200 meters above street level. Keep your eyes peeled for guests alighting via helipad – one never knows who might arrive by chopper.
